On Wednesday 6th February Desmond College welcomed
Dr. Maureen Griffin of “Internet Safety for Schools Ireland”.
Dr Griffin, a leading expert in this area, spoke to students on the dangers of using social networking sites and ‘chatting online’. She also covered areas such as YouTube, online gaming, mobile phone safety and cyberbullying. DESMOND CREDIT UNION Newcastle West, standing true to their ethos of “giving back to the community’, helped to aid the cost of this event.
That evening, Dr Griffin gave a presentation to the parents of the school. This talk provided practical advice on how to protect children when they are online or using their mobile phone. The parent talk was not about blocking content online; it is more about teaching children how to be responsible when online, by making parents aware of the dangers and highlighting some practical tips.
Desmond College Parents’ Association kindly sponsored this invaluable presentation for parents. In this age of technology, the message from Dr Griffin for students and their parents, was to be sensible and careful when using technology and to implement the same precautions around safety when online, as they would implement in real life.
