We are only one of 12 schools in Ireland to achieve this status and the only post-primary in Limerick to receive this accolade.
The awarding of this status to Desmond College is an official recognition by Schools of Sanctuary Ireland. It attests to how this school symbolises and realises an inclusive, welcoming and safe space for all pupils and their families, especially newcomers who come from refugee and migrant communities and other ethnic minorities, including the Traveller community.
To achieve the official status, the schools submitted portfolios for review and welcomed a monitoring team from Schools of Sanctuary Ireland who said the following in their report.
As well as celebrating diversity in all its forms, through activities and events in the school and the local community, this, the only post-primary Limerick School of Sanctuary has built knowledge and understanding among the students and the staff about forced migration due to violence, persecution, famine and other threats to life and freedom. The school also has exceptionally strong language support programmes for students whose first language is not English. The school can be considered a beacon and example for their work on creating a safe and welcoming space for those seeking sanctuary. It is evident that Desmond College and staff are very committed to their work. The environment was very welcoming, inclusive and happiness was visible on the face of each student. We see that all students will be great leaders of their society and family in the future.
The padlet provides an insight into the amazing work the school is undertaking.
