CSPE encourages students to be Active Citizens within their communities. Students are encouraged to examine their lives by studying the seven key concepts of CSPE:
- Rights
- Responsibilities
- Human Dignity
- Interdependence
- Stewardship
- Democracy Law
- Development
Each student participates in an action project that encourages every student to make a difference. In Desmond College the student council is an exercise in democracy. Students from each year group nominate two candidates to represent them on the council.

Students from each year group nominate two candidates to represent them on the council. Last October John Paul Geoghegan and Claire Cronin were elected to take the first year seats on the council.
CSPE classes, taught by Mrs. M O’Connor collect shoe boxes for Team Hope.
These boxes will be given to celebrate Christmas with children all over the world.
2011 – 2012
Rang Bríd
Rang Bríd organise a collection of emergency items required by the Field of Dreams Sanctuary Kilmallock. They collected dog and cat food and took recycled paper from the school as bedding for the animals.
The students organised a visit to the shelter where they got to find out more about the excellent work done by the volunteers at the animal welfare centre.
Rang Barra
Rang Barra participated in the Team Hope Shoe Box Appeal. They collected up on 100 shoe boxes filled with toys and luxury items for children who are living in terrible conditions in Easter Europe.
This collection is a real testament to the generosity and kindness of the students. Rang Brendain need to be congratulated for their community spirit, they participated in the Jack and Jill Mobile Phone Collection.
Gaelscoil O’Doghair was collecting phones in order to receive a Defibrillator for a student in their school. When the students heard this, they offered their collection of 170 phones to be donated to that school. This was a very kind act by our students and showed the real meaning of community spirit.
