have been selected for the UCD Nova Business BootCamp.
The BT Young Scientist Business Bootcamp was established in 2010 by BT and is delivered jointly with the Office of the Vice-President for Innovation on an annual basis. The Bootcamp, which take place at NovaUCD in March 2014, assists students in bridging the gap between education and business, a challenge that Ireland needs to overcome to achieve its goal of developing an innovative economy and generating employment.
During the four-day skills programme at NovaUCD the students will meet with and hear from business leaders, academics, enterprise boards and a high performance sports personality turned advocate for a ‘re-design revolution’.
Over the course of the bootcamp, they will gain practical business knowledge through a series of workshops and master-classes on subjects including business planning, intellectual property management, design thinking, communications skills, and creative thinking. Team-building skills and one-to-one mentor support for those interested in working in industry or starting their own companies will also be offered.
On the final day of the BT Young Scientist Business Bootcamp, each team will present their business plans to a judging panel including academics and senior business people. Summer placements at NUI Galway, University College Dublin (UCD), and University of Ulster will be available for the winners.

On 6th January 2014, a gathering took place in Desmond College of past and present Young Scientists to celebrate the 50th Year of the Young Scientist Competition in Ireland. The school has a long history of involvement in the competition which dates back to 1966 when two projects were entered from the Vocational School by mentor Eamon O’Connell.

Since then the school has had tremendous success in the competition winning numerous prizes including Group Winners, Category Winners, Analog Award Winner, twice winning the Teacher of Excellence Award (Donal Enright and Marie Corkery), various Display Awards and Highly Commended. As part of the celebrations the school produced a unique publication which was compiled and coordinated to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of the Young Scientists from both the old Vocational School and Desmond College over the years.

It is a great achievement for any school to get projects accepted into this much loved and very high profile national competition, yet year after year Desmond College has succeed in getting a large number of projects accepted. We are one of the top represented schools in Ireland each year and the top Limerick school for three consecutive years.

This success is testament to the calibre of our students, the support that these students get from their parents and the support they get from their teachers. Our gathering was a wonderful night where ‘old’ Young Scientists and ‘new’ Young Scientists shared ideas, swopped stories and enjoyed each other’s company. We sincerely thank all those who came from near and far to be with us on the night and we wish our 21 young students with their 10 projects well as they go to the RDS for the BT Young Scientist Competition 2014.

Kate went on to study a BA course in Language and Cultural Studies in UCC and then MA in Film Studies in UCC., Alicia is now doing BSc Midwifery in UCC and Rose went on to the National University of Ireland, Galway.
