Special Honour for Desmond College Student
from BT Young Scientist Competition
In addition to Desmond College having 16 projects accepted, Michael Upton, a leaving certificate student and twice winner at previous Young Scientists in 2010 and 2012, was selected to become a Guest Information Ambassador.
Michael has the daunting task of scripting and filming a video to be featured at the 2013 exhibition to be held in the RDS in January 9th-12th 2013.
This is a great award for Michael who along with Kieran Scanlon was featured on the Late Late Show last year, it is also affirmation of the high esteem that Desmond College students are held in by the organisers of the Young Scientist.

Young Scientist success in Desmond College
The students of Desmond College, Newcastle west have had their largest number of projects accepted into this year’s BT Young Scientist Competition. Last year Desmond College was the third best represented school in the country, but this year they have moved to joint second place with 16 projects accepted, hitting record numbers for school both North and South participating in this years BT Young Scientist competition.

In this the 49th year of the competition, 1898 projects were submitted from all over Ireland, with just 550 projects being accepted. Desmond College who has an enviable reputation in this, the biggest competition of its kind in Europe, has 16 projects accepted, involving forty one students ranging from 1st to 5th years.
Desmond College has a proud tradition in this prestigious competition, winning Overall Group Runners-up and Patent Award in 2005, 12 different awards in 2012 including the Analog Travel Award in 2012, and numerous other awards over the years.

Principal Vourneen Gavin Barry said that she is thrilled for all of the students who have had their projects accepted into this prestigious competition but that this really is only the beginning for them. She said the hard work must start for them now, with experiments, research and investigations to carry out over the coming weeks.

Desmond College Scoop Five Awards at Young Scientist Competition
There were huge cries of delight when the students of Desmond College walked into the RDS arena to see 5 awards pinned to their project displays.

Sophie Bridgeman, Fiona Barrow and Caoimhe Danaher received a ‘Display Award’ for their project entitled ‘Key Glow’. This project aims to assist the elderly in unlocking their doors at night when entering their homes.
At the other end of the arena a thrilled Cian Cremin and Seamus Hurley, inventors of the ‘Heavy Duty Hover Pad’ were ‘Highly Commended’ in their Junior Technology category. Their invention is capable of lifting significant weight that will allow for the safe and easy splitting of a tractor engine.
Also receiving a ‘Highly Commended’ and a ‘Display Award’ too, were senior students Martin Madden, Conor Barry and Peter Shanahan, whose ‘Self-Levelling Wheelbarrow’, designed with unique see-saw legs, provides extra stability on uneven ground. This project has sparked a lot of interest and offers from various people looking to buy it.

An ‘Investigation into the Life Cycle, Behaviour, Intelligence and Myths surrounding Crows’ proved to be a winner for Lisa Barrow and Orlaith Condon, who received a ‘Display Award’ for their amazing project on the Corvus Cornix or more commonly known as the Hooded Crow.
The exhibition, which is the largest of its kind in Europe, attracts huge media attention and was visited by thousands of people over it three day opening. The students of Desmond College, along with their teachers and parents, were delighted to have been so successfully involved with this competition. They also acknowledged and thanked the support they received from the local business community.
As the students returned to Limerick by bus late on Saturday evening, plans were already afoot for next years projects!
