In 2011 Music was introduced into Desmond College as a subject for both Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate.
There has been fantastic interest from students of all years. Many new extracurricular activities have been setup including the Desmond College Trad Group and the Glee club.
Students have been involved in other activities such as the choir and various bands to name a few. The annual event “The Desmond Factor” has shown the amount of musical talent that Desmond College has to offer and students have welcomed the music department with open arms. The band Apex performed during the interval of the “Fashion Show”.

Stars, Choirs and Carols
The School Choir along with a number of teachers and under the direction of Ms Jude Keane and Ms Heather McCarthy took part in Stars Choirs and Carols in Croke Park. This event was organised in an attempt to break a world record for having the largest number of people singing carols together.
Proceeds from the event all went to local charities. Unfortunately they failed to break the record but had a great time trying! The event was hosted by Miriam O’Callaghan, with guest appearance by Louis Walsh.
Trad Group
The Desmond College Trad Group recorded a CD this week to enter the Siansa Gael Linn Competition.
The group consists of James O’Connor (bodhran), Brian Harnett (guitar), Jack O’Connor (Cajon), Patrick Moriarty (Button accordion), Diarmuid Curtin (concertina, vocals), Laoise Curtin (fiddle) and Katie Nugent (concertina). The recording consists of a selection of jigs, polkas, air, song and reels. The jig was composed by Laoise Curtin.

Desmond College Trad Group Raises the Roof for Trocaire
The Desmond College Trad Group performed at a lunchtime concert held in Desmond College on the 01 Oct 2013 in aid of Trócaire. Both students and staff contributed generously to this fantastic cause raising a phenomenal amount for a school. The atmosphere in the college was electric and both the performers and audience had a lunchtime with a difference!!
As this week is also Positive Aging Week, the trad group visited St. Ita’s Nursing Home and played for the residence. Both the residence and staff were thrilled with the performance and are looking forward to more visits from the Desmond College Music Department through the year.
